Kids love American Sign Language (ASL), and a growing body of brain research illuminates the benefits of incorporating ASL into learning environments for general and specialized student populations. Teachers and librarians who incorporate ASL into interactions and activities with hearing students discover that sign language engages multiple senses; stimulates the language centers of the brain; helps teachers “see” who is listening and/or comprehending; gives busy kids and kinesthetic learners something positive/acceptable to do with their hands; provides opportunities for learning extensions and differentiated instruction; exercises fine motor muscles; transforms waiting time into learning time; bridges the communication gap in multi-lingual classrooms; empowers children to express feelings and challenging vocabulary; helps focus attention and improve behavior . . . and, it’s fun! In this fast-paced, interactive workshop, participants will sing, sign and practice key ASL signs, learn quick and easy tips to enrich learning environments with ASL, and explore recommended resources for additional learning and support.
